The book offers a glimpse of the political, social, cultural and economic conditions prevailing in the Ancient Kashmir. It highlights the rise and fall of various Hindu rulers and dynasties during the period under study. The book presents an account of the arrival of Islam through Muslim traders in the beginning of the 8th century A.D. about a hundred years after Prophet Mohammad's (PBUH) migration from Makkah to Madina. Based on different sources, the author draws sketches of Buddhist and Hindu rulers of the pre-Islamic period. The book is the result of the author's long-drawn study in different areas of the history of Kashmir.
Born in Srinagar and brought up at Sathu (Sadi Qazi Zada), Prof. G.M. Rabbani (1916-1999) studied at Sri Pratap College, Srinagar and graduated from Punjab University of Lahore. During his college days he was associated with Sri D.P Dhar and Mr G.N. Gilkar. After completing his B.T at the college of Education, he joined Education department as a master and later worked as head master. He joined the higher Education department as a lecturer in History and taught in S.P College Srinagar. He later worked in the department of History, Kashmir University and taught Kashmir History at the post graduate level. He was associated with Prof. Mohibul Hassan, Dr. Mohammad Yasin & Prof. Jala. He also taught teaching of History at various colleges of Education and Department of Distance Education, Kashmir University. He has to his credit another book "Kashmir-Social and Cultural History".
