Book Description
Preface
It gives me great pleasure in placing this work in the hands of the scholars of Indian Philosophy, particularly to the scholars of Pūrvamimāmsā.

The present text namely, Amrtabindu of Candra is a text belonging to Prābhākara school of Pūrvamimāṁsā. Only one Manuscript was available and an attempt was made in 1930 to edit this text. Accordingly a copy of the MS of the Asiatic Society of Calcutta was prepared. But it seems that because of the very corrupt nature of the Calcutta MS, the scholar must have given up the attempt of editing.

The present editor decided to make this text available and applied her mind to read both, the orginal MS and its copy and has made this text available to us. Since the text is seeing the light of the day, for the first time, I hope scholars of Mimāmsā will apply their mind and will further improve the reading of the text.

I think the scholars will receive this volume with that spirit.

I am thankful to the UGC for providing financial support for the publication of this unpublished text.

Acknowledgement
I take the opportunity to thank all those who have contributed to the completion of this work either directly or indirectly. The first and foremost person to whom I am indebted all through my academic life is my husband, Prof. V. N. Jha, Director, Centre of Advanced Study in Sanskrit (CASS), University of Pune. He inspires me to work hard through his own contributions to various fields of Sanskrit learning. I consider myself fortunate to have him as my teacher. I pay my heartfelt homage to him. My thanks are also due to the academic and non-academic staff of the CASS for their constant cooperation.

I thank my student Dr. Sushama Mehendale for helping me in the tedious task of proof reading. I wish her success in life.

Lastly, I sincerely thank Mr. Khurjekar for doing the job of printing the book neatly.

Introduction
Pūrvaimimāṁsā is perhaps the least popular system of Indian Philosophy today. The reason for this may be that the system has an intimate relationship with Vedic rituals and these rituals are mostly if not totally out-dated in the today's society. But one must accept the significance and relevance of this system of Indian Philosophy even today because, Pūrvamimämsă does not concern itself with the Vedic Rituals alone. No doubt that it has close association with the rituals on one hand but on the other it is basically a science of sentence interpretation i.e. Vākyaśāstra or Väkyārthaśāstra. And on this count its significance and relevance for all time to come can never be denied.

Contribution of the miraämsä system to the fields of semantics and that of Philosophy of Language is also unquestionable. It is these fields of Sanskrit learning and also their modern counterparts that are much indebted to mimāṁsā.

The basic text on the system of Pūrvamimāmsā is the Mimāṁsāsūtras of Jaimini. This is, we may say, the first systematic presentation of the system handed down to us today. Jaimini has referred to not less than eight teachers of this system which points to the existence of the mimämsä tradition prior to Jaimini. But the most authentic, independent and fundamental text on the system that we have today is the Jaiminisūtras (JS).
