Preface
The period of Bhakti literature in the Tamil is reckoned by scholars and historians to be between the 5th and the 9th centuries A.D. During this period two major schools of Bhakti philosophy- Saivism and Vaishnavism- were prevalent in the Tamil speaking region of southern India. To understand Tamil Bhakti literature, an understanding of the basic doctrines of Saivism and Vaishnavism is necessary.

These two major schools of the Bhakti movement developed around Lord Shiva (Saivism) and Lord Vishnu (Vaishnavism) respectively. Through their melodious poems several saintly poets inspired this movement. Saivism was inspired by the distinguished poets Tirumoolar, Appar, Tiru Gyana Sambandar, Tiru Naavukkarasar, Sundara Murti Naayanaar and Manikka Vaachakar. These saintly poets were called Naayanmars who were sixty- three in number.
