Hepatitis or inflammation of liver cells is one of the major health problems in India. Hepatitis should not be confused with jaundice. Jaundice is one of the symptoms of hepatitis but it can also due to other causes.

The chief causes of hepatitis are infections, viral or non-viral, medicines like chloroform, mushrooms or poisons, abnormal metabolism caused by fatty liver, pregnancy or Wilson's disease (inborn defect of copper metabolism), and loss of blood supply which could be because of shock or severe healt failure.
