Syed Akhtar Ahmad (pen name Akhtar Urainvi) was born in 1910 in a respectable Muslim family of Bihar. He served as the Head of the Urdu Department of Patna College and later held the post of Chairman, Department of Urdu at Patna University. As a teacher and writer, he attained a luminous position in the world of Urdu letters. His original works in Urdu-short stories, dramas, novels and poetry-were highly appreciated by contemporary writers and critics. The younger generation of that time was particularly charmed by his creative acumen and loving penmanship. Akhtar Urainvi was a champion of Urdu language and literature and worked devotedly for its development both at the political and academic levels. The credit of placing Urdu teaching at the college and university level at par with the other disciplines goes to this teacher-promoter of Urdu language and literature from Bihar.
Syed Mohammad Hasnain (b. 1920), the author of this monograph, is the first Ph.D in Urdu from the University of Bihar. He has been professor and founder - Head in the Deptt. of Urdu, Magadha University and an Emeritus Fellow of the UGC, Patna University. He is also the author of more than 16 publications. He has received awards from the Urdu Academies of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. In this monograph, Prof. Hasnain, who is a close relative of Akhtar Urainvi, illuminates his multifaceted personality and also highlights the master-writer's inborn qualities.
