PREFACE

This book is the result of a National Conference on Agribusiness and Extension Management: Status Issues and Strategies held during December 2001 at MANAGE, Hyderabad (AP). The seminar was jointly organised by International Extension Forum and MANAGE, Hyderabad and amended by delegates from different parts of India and abroad.

Indian agriculture traditionally has been a subsistence sector aiming mainly at food grain production. However, in recent years it has witnessed a great transformation resulting in attaining not only self-sufficiency in food production but also increased commercialisation. It is a well- known fact that the focus of present day agriculture is increasingly shifting from raising the production to market orientation and value addition. The factors such as fast growing market for agricultural products at domestic and international arena coupled with globalisation of economy art responsible for the above situation. The recently drafted National Agricultural Policy has accorded priority for promoting agribusiness activities at different levels.

The agribusiness is not a new concept, it started gaining momentum since the beginning of 1990s due to liberalised policies in Indian agriculture. In fact during early 1990s taking advantage of new policies in seed development, some private entrepreneurs and multinationals made entry in agribusiness dealing with hybrid seed, horticulture, floriculture and meat processing to cater both domestic and foreign markets. Our experiences with agribusiness show that it has succeeded only in selected pockets while remaining as an untapped potential in many areas. There is a greater scope for agribusiness activities related to production of seeds, medicinal and aromatic plants, and propagation of planting materials through tissue culture techniques, aquaculture, floriculture, production of fruits and vegetables for domestic and export purpose. What is needed is to identify the potentials of agribusiness under different agro climatic regions and to find out its irrelevance to prove The farming situations of the country.

The changing scenario of agriculture as discussed above calls for based inputs, which are essential for agribusiness at various levels. Reorientation of a of agricultural extension systems so as to transfer knowledge based inputs, which are essential for agribusiness at various levels.
