दो शब्द 'र' वर्ण अग्नि का सूचक है तथा अग्नि और प्रकाश का अटूट सम्बंध है। जहां अग्नि है वहां प्रकाश का होना अवश्यंभावी है। अग्नि का कार्य है शुद्ध करना। उसके सम्पर्क में जो भी वस्तु आती है उसकी सारी अशुद्धता नष्ट हो जाती है, वह पूर्ण रूप से स्वच्छ हो जाती है। संस्कृत में एक श्लोक है रम् अग्निम् तनोति इति रत्नः इस श्लोक का सीधा सा अर्थ है कि तेज और प्रकाश को फैलाने वाला, उसका संवाहक जो है वह रत्न है। रत्न शब्द का भी पहला वर्ण 'र' है। अर्थात रत्न में भी अग्नि की ही तरह शुद्ध करने का, समस्त प्रकार की अशुद्धता. को दूर करने का दिव्य गुण विद्यमान है। कहा जा सकता है कि विधिवत रत्न धारण करने से समस्त प्रकार की शरीरिक, मानसिक और आध्यात्मिक अशुद्धियां दूर हो जाती हैं।
