Preface

Some artists devote their entire life to an art. They not only master the art, but also make enormous contribution to the art itself. They are trend setters. They change the course of the art form. Their name becomes synonymous with the art. They serve as an everlasting source of inspiration for anybody pursuing the art, for generations to come. "Abbaji", Ustad Alla Rakha was one such artist.

I started learning Tabla in my childhood in a small town called Udgir in Maharashtra. I come from a family of farmers. My father had keen interest in Indian classical music and wished at least one of his children learnt music in depth. There were limited opportunities for a student of Tabla to watch maestros in live concerts in our remote town and exposure to performances of maestros was mainly through audio cassettes.

Despite the fact that I never met Abbaji, I regarded him as my guru. Getting introduced to his musical style during my learning journey was a moment of epiphany.
