The 58th National Exhibition of Art is the most prestigious event in the annual calendar of the Lalit Kala Akademi. This is not because of the scale of its operations but because of its essential gravity only. For the Lalit Kala Akademi, which is India's National Academy of Art, the conduct of the National Exhibition of Art engineers the focus of art developments of the country. The 58th National Exhibition of Art has established once again that the event has been upheld for its intrinsic value in the art comity, primarily because it reflects the progressive and unprecedented stature of Indian art in the present times. The 6000 or more entries that were received from artists all over the country for this competitive event were diverse, classy and well-structured submissions, showing thereby that the makers of Indian art today are committed to giving their best towards this exercise. Thus the choice of a select few for the final exhibition was no easy cakewalk for the knowledgeable jury members.
In their effort to maintain the high benchmark set by their predecessors and in keeping with the essential character of an august institution such as the Lalit Kala Akademi, the selection process for the event was conducted with transparency and objectivity Each of the submissions had been adjudged through a graded marking system in the scale of one to ten and the First Tier Jury had short listed 111 works. The task was fine-tuned further as the members held discussions on the merits and demerits of each work in the course of their deliberations, making the final outcome a flawless and well meshed offer, before the second tier jury members.
In the second round of adjudging by yet another set of eminent art practitioners the 111 works were again put to a severe test, for the selection of 15 National Awardees. The team for the Second Tier Jury had met at Bengaluru and after rounds of sincere crosschecking and brainstorming, wherein each member had taken time over their deliberations, keeping in mind the need for transparency and clear sighted rationale guiding their views, had reached satisfactory results.
In the aftermath of the 58th National Exhibition of Art, the LKA has also arranged an Art Conclave as a follow-up, in which the artists and the jury members will meet face-to-face and exchange their views on art, and art practices. A seminar during the same period on the quality of art education in the country, conducted by a panel of art academicians and practitioners, will also be held. These initiatives are some of the significant steps that the Lalit Kala Akdemi has taken to make the National Exhibition initiative a still wider and more inclusive platform for art activities in the country.
