Formerly Professor of Social Anthropology at Lucknow. University, he has been Fulbright 'Scholar in Residence' and Visiting Professor in US and Senior Fellow, Indian Council of Social Science Research.

This book is in response to the feedback given to me by many of my students appearing for the civil services examinations. In a General Studies paper some aspects of the Indian society are also there and a variety of questions are asked not strictly adhering to the topics given in the syllabus; many of these are peripheral or on the fringe. Moreover, under Current Affairs a number of such areas are asked included in this book. Not only this, awareness of such topics covered in this book is also tested in the interview/personality test through opinion oriented questions posed by the board. Even otherwise, every aware, sensitive, and concerned Indian citizens must also know about the issues discussed in the present book.

First of all I thank my wife Nishaat, herself a women's rights activist, for helping me with her insight into a number of issues especially those pertaining to women.
