The National Exhibition, a multifaceted event is organised with the objective of showcasing the current trends in Contemporary Indian art practice. The exhibition comprising Paintings, Sculptures, Graphics, Photographs and Ceramics, represents a vast panorama of creations and is open to artists all over the country. The Akademi is organising the 44th National show at Ahmedabad. An overwhelming response received in terms of entries reflects a strong resurgence of the art scene.
A notable feature imbibed in the selection process this year has been the introduction of a two tier system. Initially, a five member Jury comprising of eminent personalities nominated by the General Council of Lalit Kala Akademi undertook the challenging task of assessing a large number of works. The Jury consisting of Sarvashri Jeram Patel, Vidyasagar Upadhyay, Tarak Garai, S. Bhawani Shankar and O.P. Khare selected 293 works, out of a total of 5291 works submitted by 2033 artists. A further scrutiny for the conferment of Awards and Honourable Mentions was then made by another Jury comprising of Sarvashri Surya Prakash, Shuvaprasanna, Amrut Patel and Vasant Sonavani under the Chairmanship of renowned Sculptor Shri Amarnath Sehgal. The Jury recommended the works of 9 artists for the National Academy Award and 5 for Honourable Mention.
