Indian fashion has come of age. Fashion designers are going places, jet setting abroad and participating in high octane reputed fashion events. They are firmly getting a foothold in the global fashion scenario. The government too has realized the importance of design elements to promote export of textiles, jewellery, leather and other lifestyle items. It has sponsored fashion shows organized worldwide to create a favorable image for the Indian products. Further, people in general have become conscious of their appearance.
All these developments have led to creation of a huge domestic and export market for lifestyle products. This book deals with various job opportunities available to youngsters having +2 or equivalent qualification particularly in the area of design- its production, marketing and promotion.
I hope this book would benefit all those seeking information on a range of career options available in the field of fashion in India and would serve a handy companion for those who want to chart out a course in fashion arena.
I would however request the readers to go through websites of various institutes. A list of few training Institutes has been given in the last chapter, to ascertain latest information about various courses mentioned in the following pages.
The great fashion churning is on and has taken India in its stride in a very big way. In the fashion melting pot of today, India is adding its own quintessential flavor. The inter-change of the fashion between India and other
countries has led to a movement in the field in the country. The older preference of a tailoring shop for getting clothes stitched has given way to the liking for a readymade dress manufactured by a reputed company or a designer. Even in the case of jewellery, people are going for such items which have been designed in tune with the latest trends. All these have resulted in the emergence of a full fledged industry in the country.
Today, India is the second largest producer of textile and garment and the export of textiles and garments constitute around 11 per cent of our total exports. There are many designers too who are either supplying their products to retail stores in other countries directly or are manufacturing products for them.
All these have brought in professionalism in the associated activities. Dances and eye-popping catwalks are on their way out and serious and professional choreography is taking over with Indian fashion designers eyeing immediate profits. And so, a host of careers too have sprung up.
According to Ajay Bisht, Assistant Director Fashion Styling and Communication, Karnavati University, near Gandhinagar, Fashion shows are basically unveiling your brand to the people. Earlier fashion shows were held to promote hi fashion products only by established designers or big clothing brands. So it used to be held at a small scale for limited people basically prospective buyers. But now that big fashion houses and premium clothing manufacturing companies have come into retailing and also opening their shops in shopping malls etc selling products at relatively affordable prices bringing in competition, fashion shows have become wholly a serious commercial activity. Such shows are organised as pre publicity exercise to announce immediate arrival of new designs and styles to attract buyers.
He further adds that Fashion designers and prominent brands are holding Fashion shows each season and the same are being publicised and webcasted on social media platforms also.
No wonder then, a host of careers too have emerged alongside relating to promotion of fashion products such as Fashion Show Choreography, Fashion Photography, Fashion Styling, Modeling, Fashion Show Compering, Fashion Event Management, Fashion PR, Fashion Makeup etc.
