Ippagunta Mallikarjuna Rao was born on 5th Jan, 1940 at Chavatapalem in Prakasam (Dt.) of Andhra Pradesh. He graduated from Hindu college, Guntur and was formerly Headmaster, Z.P.H.(Boys)School, Kandukur, Prakasam (Dt.). He was a National Awardee (1996). Mr. I. Mallikarjuna Rao, a retired Head-master and teacher of English and Social Studies for over 4 decades in the service of the A.P. State Government, had naturally chosen to educate the youth of the day on the need to better themselves, drawing inspiration and motivation from the illustrious lives of the mighty minds of the past, of India and abroad, who have contributed a lot to the advancement of human personality in word, deed and thought.

Mr. Rao had drawn a picture gallery of men of eminence and excellence to suit and serve his purpose of faithfully representing in a nutshell what each said and did as also what others, their contemporaries, said of them.

We here have a score of Pen Portraits of the Great from various and different walks of life such as Philosophy, Politics, Science, Engineering and Social Services.

Here great national leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru, spiritual leaders like Gautama Buddha, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, and Sri Satya Sai Baba, social service volunteers like Mother Teresa and Albert Schweitzer keep company with Einstein, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, both scientists, engineers, Sir Arthur Cotton and Sir M. Visweswarayya and the Architect of Modern Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew.

In short, this book of biopics covers a wide range and a vast period of time from the Buddha of the 6th century B.C. to Sri Satya Sai Baba, the Miracle Man of the 20th century A.D., falling into one of the five divisions planned by the author.

Thus, Mr Rao seems to have made a careful selection to illustrate the human achievement so as to keep the youth informed and ready to engage themselves in furthering it in the years to come, drawing inspiration and motivation from out of the humble but illustrious lives of the mortal Immortals presented herein.

Such attempts by writers need to be taken note of and appreciated. The author deserves all praise for the job well done.
