Foreword
The First International Print Biennale marks an epical step forward in the workings of the Lalit Kala Akademi, in its role as India's National Academy of Art. Known for pioneering, sustaining, and carrying forward the best practices in art, both at home and abroad, this apex art body has played a substantive role as nurturer, sustainer and promoter in the chosen field. In matters of printmaking this multiplicity of roles conferred on its august shoulders has been amplified to a distinguished status. The institution holds the distinction of premiering the pioneer showcasing of printmaking for a larger public, by organizing one of the first printmaking exhibitions in India under its umbrella in 1984. Thereafter, the link with this art form has been cemented further and more meaningfully through the holding of 59 National Exhibitions of Art wherein the role of printmakers has been paramount, both in terms of Awardees as also the entries received on this competitive platform. Taking it to an international level too, by facilitating Indian artists' participations at International Print Biennale platforms worldwide, has been a long- standing precedent in this hallowed institution.
