The gods are called by many names: dev (the bright), amar (immortal), sur (fond of sura or drinks). They are said to be living in the skies and the higher peaks of the Himalayas. Of them, the three supreme ones were Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar or Shiv. They were godheads rather than simply gods. There were countless others with various special powers. The gods had an ongoing fight with demons (a-surs, daityas, danavs). The gods were immortal, the demons were not. The gods were (usually) good, the demons were (usually) not.
