It was our honor and privilege to host this conference in collaboration with LIFE; one of the most significant engagement groups of Civil20. The purpose of Civil20 (C20) is to bring together voices, ideas, and solutions from civil societies across the globe through an esteemed platform of G20.
India has produced the most sublime thoughts and ideas in the domain of nature and ecology since time immemorial. These ideas inspired saints, scholars, and activists to shape the ecological consciousness of India toward all aspects of life. Having found the deeper unity of life and its varied manifestations, Indian seers have ensured and built a mechanism to transform this perception into practice.
Our mother earth is facing a severe environmental crisis. Her one arrogant offspring, humans at large, is living an unrestrained life and causing great damage to everyone on this planet. Having abandoned the traditional wisdom of living in harmony with nature, we humans are heading towards self-alienation and self-destruction.
The only way to avoid this seemingly inevitable crisis is to revive the teachings and practices of our elders. They showed us the path of wisdom by which we can live on this planet as one of its members, interconnected with other species, and not as someone who has been given an inalienable right to conquer and exploit nature. Centre for Indic Studies has been committed to understand and revive these 'ancient yet living practices' of India for the benefit of humankind. A two-day national conference on Acharanam at Indus University, in collaboration with LIFE (working group of C20), gave us an opportunity to explore such wise practices across the country with the help of the finest minds and practitioners in this field. More than twenty-five scholars, sages and participants came together to discuss and find solutions for the ecological challenges of our time that are rooted in unsustainable lifestyles.
One of the main features of this conference was an exhibition on the same theme, having art panels of 108 mantras selected from the sacred scriptures of India. These mantras and wisdom sutras have shaped the ecological consciousness of Indians for millennia. These panels of mantras have received huge appreciation from expert participants and a perceptive audience. Based on their feedback, we decided to publish these art panels in the form of an illustrated book, which you are now holding in your hand.
