About Lakshminath Bezbaroa (1868- 1938), creator of the Assamese national anthem, O Mor Aponar Desh, one might say that 'the mention of his name in a gathering of his countrymen is like run- ning up the national flag.'
It is amazing that this self-exiled patriot should also be a principal architect of Assamese literature as we know it today with all its wealth of essays, drama, fiction and poetry. Probably no other individual of his days contributed to it so much with such wonderful devotion and versatility as did Bezbaroa.
Professor Hem Barua, author of Assamese Literature, has discussed and assessed in this monograph Bezbaroa's place in the history of Assamese literature with a scholar's understanding and a poet's sensibility.
The fragrance of a lotus is the sumtotal of the fragrance of in- dividual petals that compose the lotus. The composite beauty of Indian culture and literature is the sumtotal of what has been or is being achieved in different regional spheres. If the petals are taken away, the lotus ceases to exist; if what has been achieved in the regional spheres is bypassed, the composite image of India gets distorted and disturbed.
From this standpoint, the attempt to communicate what has been achieved in the regional spheres in the world of culture and literature through books to other regions of our great country is a most welcome idea. This little book on Sahityarathi Lakshmi- nath Bezbaroa (1868-1938) is one such humble effort. Sahitya Akademi has surely given shape to a commendable idea by decid- ing to bring out a series of such books.
If this humble book serves the purpose for which it has been planned, I shall feel my efforts amply rewarded. Prof. Nanda Talukdar of Gauhati has helped me with books and constant probing to do the work. I thank this old pupil of mine.
