A creative martial and a born warrior, Lord Kartikeya was
the one who defeated the demon Tarakasura. It is said that by worshipping Lord Kartikeya,
also known by the name Skanda or Murugan, one can achieve knowledge and eternal
youth. He is iconographied here as a handsome young warrior god who stands in a
posture of blessing devotees of fearless life with that soothing smile on lips
indicating towards the Lord’s success of his mission of killing the demon. This
Kartikeya marble sculpture reflects all the traits of perfection and beauty of it’s
carves as each and every posture and expression adds on to the beauty of the Lord.
The contrasting bright colors of his garbs are a marvelous depiction
of his royalty and divinity. The royal red stole is decorated with gold zari
motifs and complements with the precious gold jewels beautified with red and
green studded stones. Carefully notice the perfection of pleats formed in his
dhoti and stole directing towards the superiority of the sculptor’s skills and
the painstaking time taken to carve out this Skanda sculpture out of a single
piece of marble.
Peacock standing behind is Kartikeya’s sacred vahana and he
holds a spear as a weapon to destroy the evils. The white base of the sculpture
beautifully highlights every other color, hence enhancing Kartikeya’s innate
beauty and sculptor’s creative skills. The glorified sun haloed crown is a mark
of the Lord’s kingship and spirituality.
