A Kalachakra or Wheel of Time Mandala is the most profound artistic expression of the philosophies of Buddhism, used in ritual meditation by Buddhist practitioners and seekers of pure wisdom. At the heart of the Mandala dedicated to Kaala (time), is the idea of impermanence, which governs the discourses of Buddhism.
Traditionally, a Kalachakra Mandala is made and scattered after use, to demonstrate the transient nature of human life, which is but one stage in the larger scheme of the Universe, which is represented by the symmetrical aesthetics of a Kalachakra Mandala.
This Thangka depicting Kalachakra is based on the vision of the Mandala as a heavenly palace, which is believed to be inhabited by 722 deities equated also with the human body, with the Buddha’s enlightened self, symbolized in the center of the diagram, by the pristine lotus blooming. Besides the finesse in the lines and patterns of the Mandala, the sacred yellow that surrounds the drawing soothes the heart. Yellow in Buddhism is symbolic of the disconnect between the individual with the worldliness all around. Separated from the world, one begins the journey toward the center of Kalachakra Mandala, where lies the key to the attainment of Buddhahood.
