In numerous scriptures pertaining to yoga, the sahasrara chakra has been linked to the moon. The word ‘sahasrara’ translates to thousand/s. It is the name for the topmost nerve plexus (chakra) of the human anatomy. In the oil painting that you see on this page, an Indian yogi is depicted as having established a connection to the moon through his sahsrara chakra.
He is in the midst of dense wilderness. Merciless rock and verdure in the background, barely visible in the dead of night. In the distance, a tiger treads across the undulating landscape. Its head is turned towards the viewer, sending a chill down the observer’s spine. Note the luxuriant, expressive brushstrokes of the nightsky.
The yogi has been steeped in sadhana for an unimaginably long time. There is wildgrowth creeping up his superbly still limbs. His silver beard has lengthened into dreadlocks, looking like snakes cradling in His lap. The painter’s attention to details such as long finger- and toe-nails and the barely-there bone structure, is remarkable.
