Rahu, the ascending node & Ketu, the descending node are the head and tail of the same demon. He was the son of Vrihaspati and Simhika. Rahu is the spirit who causes eclipses by attempting to devour the sun and the moon.

The myth of Rahu is connected with the churning of the ocean and the strife of the gods and anti-gods for the possession of the ambrosia and the sovereignity of the world. He is described as a black man riding on a lion. In this Madhubani Painting, his full form is avoided, placing him, neck upwards on a crescent moon on the lion's back. Rahu's animosity with the sun and the moon is played upon in Hindu mythology in connection with solar and lunar eclipses.

"If a person be born under the planet Rahu, his wisdom and riches will be destroyed; he will be exposed to many afflictions and be subject to his enemies."

Besides being the ascending node of the moon, Rahu is also the regent of the southwest quarter.
