After Devi Sati self-immolated, Lord Shiva retired from his life as a householder. But the Srishti (universe) required Purusha (supreme male energy) and Prakriti (Shakti, female energy) to become one. The great goddess was thus born as Parvati and performed unimaginable austerities, which moved Mahadeva. This oil painting envisions the moment when Parvati’s efforts bore fruit, and Shiva appeared, fulfilling her wish to become his wife. Riding his Nandi bull, Shiva blesses Parvati, who offers her elation to the Shiva-Linga with holy water.
