Vishnu assumed this incarnation to put an end to the arrogance and oppression of the Brahmins, and to purify Hinduism from the rituals that had grown out of hand. The new doctrine which he preached as Buddha, taught that every man could deliver himself from the wheel of rebirth by means of a correct inner attitude.
Buddha is shown here seated in the lotus position, with his hands in the teaching mudra. A noteworthy feature in the painting is the delineation of his robes, the folds of which are skillfully rendered.
The artist is Shri Manohar Saini of Kishangarh, Ajmer (Rajsathan).
