The abode of Buddha’s aspect as Kalachakra- the deity of the cyclic passage of time, a Kalachakra Mandala is the initiates’ map to entering the enlightened landscape of Buddhism. Divided into five levels, the Kalachakra Mandala is a palace-like structure, which is a ritual diagram used by Buddhist practitioners to bring balance and peace to the universe.
The Mandala is essentially six concentric circles, symbolic of the universe, with its four cardinal points marked by different colors. East is represented by black, south by red, west by yellow, and north by white. The act of drawing, visualizing, and seeing with the Kalachakra Mandala is a potent step toward unveiling the wisdom within, and even a simple gazing at the Kalachakra Mandala is believed to sow the seeds of enlightenment in the mind of the gazer.
This Thangka has transformed the diagram of Kalachakra traditionally done on the ground into a meticulously delineated, stimulating meditation device. The circle is symbolic of the eternal movement of Kala or time, within which the different levels of the Universe are encased, the freedom from which is at the heart of the Kalachakra- realizing one’s inner wisdom.
