In Rajasthan the art of painting had reached its pinnacle in the 18th century. The Krishna cult of Vaishnavism was a popular theme with artists. The love legend of Radha and Krishna provided them with numerous opportunities to portray a love both spiritual and worldly.

The water and the skies come together to celebrate the earthly love of Radha and Krishna. A large lotus blooms in the cosmic waters to hold the loving couple and the clouds collect to encompass them in their fold. Their bodies are entwined with each other as much as their hearts communicate. The blue-bodied Krishna is inseparable from the fair complexioned Radha. With on arm around each other, their spare hands hold the flute to Krishna's lips. Fine clothes and jewels bedeck their bodies; Krishna's crown is of course more elaborate than Radha's simple one.

The artist has used brilliant colours for the protagonist and dull ones for the foreground and the background. He has painted a halo behind the two heads and another pale circle to shower his blessings upon the divine couple. The waters are also grey with a tinge of blue, dull, nevertheless.
