First published in Hindi in 1957, this novel created a furore, for it was the first of its kind to discuss ‘homosexuality’, a subject kept under the wraps so far... this is a novel which tells the story of 57 lanes joined to a road, like ribs to the backbone. Written in the back waters of Uttar Pradesh, the most populated state of Indian Republic, it describes characters that are fearless, and yet command a lot of respect from their friends and acquaintances.
About the Author
Born in Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh, Kamleshwar started his career as a journalist and has been associated with well-known magazines, TV and radio. He was for two years the Additional Director General of Doordarshan. Some of his important Hindi novels include ‘Samudra Main Khoya Hua Aadmi ‘ ‘Dak Bangla ‘. ‘Laute Hue Musafir’, ‘Teesra Aadmi , ‘Kali Andhi ‘ and ‘Ek Sadak Sattavan Galiyan ‘ Prominent among his short-story collections are ‘Raja Wirbansia’, ‘Kasbe ‘. ‘Aadmt’, ‘Zinda Murde’. ‘Bayan’ and others.
