My interest grew in the study of this remote town of Bihar While working on a paper for a symposium, my presentation being "A manifestation of transition through the extant Sur monuments". In my understanding, Sasaram was drawn out of obscurity by the genius of Sher Shah, the spectacular political protagonist, a master strategist in war, an able general, imbued with administrative acumen, having a vision for reforms which any ruler could envy and coming from a humble origin, an insatiable ambition to carve out an empire for himself. The sources for the study of Sasaram are scattered. The reluctant and grudgingly oblique references by mughal chroniclers contrast with the eulogising writings of the afghan historians. The study of the monuments of the period by both foreign and Indian archaeologists and the writings of various other historians needed to be gone through and relevant information teased out from the maze. A few visits to Sasaram and its scattered monuments or the ruins of it did leave a lasting impression both about the place and the architect.
