The genesis of the Descriptive Catalogue of Manuscripts in Mithila has been described in the Introduction to Volume 1 published in 1927. The late Dr. Jayaswal and myself arranged the MSS. into eleven sections, and Volume I under our joint editorship appeared in 1927 and contained a description of the Smpti MSS. acquired since the Search for Sanskrit and Prakrit MSS. in Bihar and Orissa was instituted in 1918 by Government under Sir Edward Gait, the then Governor of the Province and also the President of the Bihar and Orissa Research Society.
Volume II containing MSS. on Literature, Prosody and Rhetoric was edited by Dr. Jayaawal and was published in 1933.
It had been originally intended to publish the Vyakarana MSS, as Volume III. Dr. Jayaswal and I, however, thought that the MSS. on Jyotibſästra were not only rich and varied but also so characteristic of Mithila, that they might precede the other volumes which are being gradually made ready for the press.
The present volume appears ten years after the first volume and nineteen years after the inauguration of the Search for MSS. and is printed like Volumes I and II with the funds generously placed at the disposal of the Society for the purpose by the late Maharajadhiraja of Darbhanga. It has not been possible to secure early production. Advantage, however, has been taken of the slow passage of the work through the press to include descriptions of manuscripts noticed since 1927.
